Facebook changes impact old JustGiving app

How Facebook changes impact you

Facebook has finally begun rolling out promised changes to badges – causing headaches for users of our old JustGiving app.  (Note: The new app is still working beautifully, but keep in mind it only works for certain JustGiving pages – see below.)

First off:  We’re really sorry for your headaches!  As Facebook goes, they don’t update developers when they make such changes – we just figure it out as they go.

Secondly: If you use our Facebook apps, here’s what to do:

>   If your JustGiving page address starts with http://www.justgiving.com/—: Make sure you’ve downloaded our excellent new JustGiving Facebook application at apps.facebook.com/justgivingapp/ . It’s got lots of great new features and new ways to really engage your Facebook friends in your fundraising.

>  If your JustGiving page address starts with http://original. justgiving.com/— or  http://raceforlifesponsorme.org/—, the new app unfortunately won’t work for you.  But you can still use Facebook for your fundraising! Just update your Facebook status (on your Facebook profile page) to tell your friends about your fundraising.  Make sure you include a link to your JustGiving page, so they know where to read more and donate to you. Regular status updates as to your progress and or your training – along with that link each time – will help them remember to support you.

We’ll stay on top of this and keep you all posted of any further Facebook app changes.

In the meantime,  check out our top 10 tips for fundraising on Facebook and the JustGiving guide to social media fundraising -- for plenty more ways to use  JustGiving and Facebook to give your fundraising a boost.

Thanks for bearing with us!

the new app widget looks great – but it still doesn't show the amount raised like the old one did?

Hi Sandhy. Glad you like the look! Where are you looking for it to show the amount raised? FB has eliminated boxes, so you won't be able to have the box on the left-hand side of your profile page. But once you go into the new app tab (on your Facebook profile) you get something very similar to your JustGiving profile page – include your target/amount raised and the thermometer graphic. No? DM me @justgiving if not – we'll see where the trouble is. Thanks! – Martha

I agree, showing the amount in the box on your profile was really good, much more immediate when someone goes to you profile. The tab is good – but still a stage removed. The box was instant (target/amount raised/charity)! Not an improvement to lose this!

Thanks Samantha. We know…and agree. But our hands are a bit tied with Facebook's decision to remove all of these boxes :( . The good thing about the new app though is it gets your fundraising into your friends' feeds regularly – keeping them involved and aware of your fundraising – maybe even more so than just the box on your profile page. We're sorry about the box though — we really liked them too.

For some reason when people click on the donate button on my just giving page via facebook it just goes to a black screen.

    Does anyone know why?

Hi Lee. The old Facebook app doesn’t work with all pages. We’ve since released a new Facebook app that’s here: http://blog.justgiving.com/community/new-facebook-app/
