Japan in Crisis: How you can help

A number of charities have set up urgent relief appeals to aid their relief efforts in Japan. Find out how you can help them below.

Since last Friday’s earthquake in Japan, so many of you have been in touch asking how you can help with the relief effort.

As the crisis continues to unfold and as we still try to comprehend the terrible scale of the disaster, here is an update of the different ways that you can help the millions of people that have been affected.

Donate directly to a charity’s appeal

Civic Force
Donate at http://www.justgiving.com/civicforce-japan

Civic Force provides prompt and effective disaster relief to large scale natural disasters in Japan. They are currently transporting relief goods and experts by helicopter and trucks to the affected areas. Furthermore, they are in the process of setting up 12 “balloon shelters (capable of accommodating 600 people) and 50 emergency tents (which can accommodate up to 250 people) as temporary shelters.  Note: this is ideal for non-UK donors, as Civic Force is not able to collect Gift Aid on donations.

Ocado Japan Appeal
Donate at http://www.justgiving.com/ocado

Jason Gissing, one of the co-founders of the online grocery service Ocado was among the many of you contacting us this week in response to the events in Japan. Jason wanted to enable Ocado customers make a real difference to those affected and did so by setting up a page for the Japanese charity Peace Winds. In little over 12 hours, the page has raised an awe-inspiring £72,000.

Rose Charities UK Appeal
Donate at http://www.justgiving.com/amda-japan/

Rose Charities, together with AMDA Japan, are supporting medical teams in the Senai area.  AMDA had a team in the disaster area within 24 hours and now has 5 medical teams operating in and around Sendai.  AMDA is also trucking in badly needed supplies.   Rose Charities UK is part of the international Rose Charities. It supports the Rose Charities ideal of simple effective person-to-person projects based on needs identified by communities themselves with close-to zero administration costs.

GlobalGiving Relief Fund
Donate at http://www.justgiving.com/project/1787325

Donations to the GlobalGiving Relief Fund will disburse funds to organisations providing relief and emergency services to victims of the earthquake and tsunami. GlobalGiving is working with International Medical Corps, Save the Children and other organisations on the ground. The funds from this project will help the survivors and those affected get the necessary services.

Other Appeals
You can also donate via JustGiving to a number of other UK-based charities aiding relief efforts. These include:

If you know any others please add them to the comments below.

Support a fundraiser’s effort

Loads of people are setting up fundraising pages, to rally their friends, family and colleagues to raise money for the Japanese relief effort.  Just a few of these are below….add any others as comments to this post.

Thanks so much to all of our incredible community for your generous response in this time of terrible crisis.

Please also support the emergency and long-term response of local voluntary and community organisations in the worst hit areas, since they will work with affected communities over the long term, when the eyes of the world have turned elsewhere. This can be done through the Japan Society’s appeal (no administration costs involved!) – http://www.japansociety.org.uk/earthquake/

    Dear Sir/Madam

In the light of the most tragic news that has affected Japan & its
people, I am just wondering if you know if any overseas families are
offering to foster those Japanese children who have been orphaned,
lost their home, and/or are in need of solace and education as a
    result of the recent disaster?

I am simply a housewife living in London SW16 who would be more than
happy to offer shelter & home to any child affected by this disaster
to help them start their lives again. It would mean that this child
could have a fresh start in life albeit in a different country & culture.

Do you know of any such organisations that are looking for this type
    of public overseas assistance?

I would be grateful if you could let me know and look forward to
hearing from you as soon as possible.

    Yours sincerely

    Elaine W-Bailey (Mrs)
