JustGiving Insights: after the marathon

London marathon runners

It’s over a month since the marathon, and we thought that it might be a good time to take another peek into the database*.

When should you start fundraising?

Most fundraising pages for this year’s marathon were made in January 2011 – and our most popular day for making pages was January the 4th, the first day back in the office since the Christmas break.

If you made your page in January you did pretty well, as every page created in January raised £104 more than the average.

However, those canny souls who created their page in November (most likely after getting a marathon ballot place, and starting training) raised even more – an extra £120 per page on average.  And if you started in December, you did pretty well too.

So, if you get a marathon place next year start fundraising as soon as you start training and you’ll raise more for your charity.

The name game

When we looked at the database before the marathon David was the most frequent male runner’s name. However, Davids weren’t the most successful fundraisers: those were guys named James. I am happy to report that after all is said and done, team David came through. So David is now both the most frequent and the most successful name of JustGiving’s marathon fundraisers.

There was no such tension for the women though – Sarah is still our most popular and successful name, followed by Emma in second place. Our photo above has got it wrong because Emma is speeding ahead, but it was too good not to post!

And how about those surnames?  Smiths continued to raise the most, but there were a few surprises when we compared popular and successful surnames.  Keillers and Walkers punched considerably above their weight, and kicked the Lewises and Davises off of the league table. I have a feeling the success of the Keiller name has something to do with this guy – what a fundraiser!
