London Marathon round-up

There are a few croaky voices and aching arms in the JustGiving office this week, after we turned out in force to cheer on the Virgin London Marathon runners on Sunday, including Charlie, our People Person, and Tim from our Finance team. A big congratulations to everyone who took part.

Including Gift Aid, runners raised more than £1 million on JustGiving over the Marathon weekend, with a record-breaking £557,132.63 raised on Sunday alone. This takes the total London Marathoners have raised on JustGiving this year to over £19 million, and sponsorship money is still rolling in.

We spread out along the course, with cheerers stationed at mile seven (Cutty Sark), mile 12 (Jamaica Road), mile 14 (Limehouse), mile 15/18 (Heron Quays) and mile 24 and a half (Victoria Embankment). A special mention should go to our dedicated cheerleaders who secured their spots at 5.30 AM – only to find the roads weren’t closed yet!

We took hundreds of pictures on Sunday, and will be busy uploading them to our Flickr stream over the next few days. We’ll be releasing one set a day, starting with last week’s Expo (seems a long time ago now, doesn’t it?). So see if you can spot yourself or your supporters, and if you’ve got any great photos you’d care to share with the JustGiving community, please join our Virgin London Marathon Flickr group here.

I never thought I would be promoting the benefits of the humble Jelly Baby but, after nearly dying at mile 21, a handful was all that I needed to see me to the finish. I’m very grateful to the kind spectator who gave them to me! See my story at http://www.justgiving.com/tonywalton-2010

Great tip Tony! I’m quite partial to jelly beans, but can’t really – but still do – justify consuming them on my 5K runs.

Alex, I’ve spent a small fortune on gels over the years and be rewarded with buckets-full of nausea. A think a strategic switch to jelly bean/baby might be the way forward.
