Making Zakat donations on JustGiving

How to calculate and donate Zakat online

Update – August 2012: Click here for more information about giving zakat online and for current zakat appeals.

As the blessed month of Ramadan finishes, many in the Islamic community look to complete their annual obligation of Zakat.  JustGiving makes it easy to fulfil your zakat obligation online. There are several Islamic charities on our website. You can also give anonymously through JustGiving, if you so choose.

The links below are some of the charities to which you can give Zakat on JustGiving.

Giving Zakat to charities on JustGiving
When you give to a charity on JustGiving, we pass on your donation directly to the charity. We also collect Gift Aid (UK government tax relief on charitable donations) on eligible donations too -  helping your zakat donation go even further for people in need.

Calculate your zakat
Zakat is generally
calculated at 2.5% of monetary savings… with other percentages applying to other forms of wealth (crops and animals, for example).  Individuals are meant to calculate how their personal zakat- but several online calculators are available to help.   Islamic Relief offers this  Zakat calculator, for example.

Zakat must be given with the clear intention of zakat. So if you’ve given charitable donations  (to a fundraiser or charity) throughout the year, they do not go toward the percentage of your zakat obligation — unless you clearly intended that donation as zakat when you made it.

Anonymous giving on JustGiving
You can donate your zakat anonymously through JustGiving. If you choose do so, neither the public nor the charity will know your identify.

To donate anonymously,  follow the normal donation process. Enter your payment details as usual. Then, under ‘Set your Contact Preferences’, leave the two boxes unchecked. That means we won’t share your details with the charity.

About Zakat
Zakat is one of the five Pillars of Islam.  Each year, Muslims give away a fixed percentage (generally 2.5%) of their wealth to benefit the poor and deprived.  It is considered an act of worship and purifying, for both the giver and the recipient.

A NOTE TO CHARITIES

Does your  charity want to set up a JustGiving appeal page where your supporters can donate their Zakat? Have a look at our step-by-step guide to creating your appeal page.  Remember: JustGiving automatically reclaims Gift Aid on your charity’s behalf on every eligible donation.
