Pay up Pompey

Portsmouth FC fans have joined forces on JustGiving to make sure the club’s money troubles don’t have a knock on effect on the charities it supports. In February, it became the first club in the premier league to go into administration.

This week the three JustGiving pages created by Pompey fan Tom Purnell were our top three most popular fundraising pages.

The first appeal, to raise money for St John Ambulance, beat its £2,702 target in just over 24 hours.  The fans’ second campaign, for Harbour Cancer Support Centre, has also topped its £2,300 target.

“Pompey fans have always been proud to support their club and are renowned as the most loyal and passionate fans in the country. That doesn’t mean, however, that we are proud of the way the club has been mismanaged in recent years,”

Tom said on the St John Ambulance page. Now the club’s fans have turned their fundraising focus to the South Central Ambulance Service.

“The South Central Ambulance Service is owed £19,535.39 by Portsmouth FC. This appeal aims to raise £2,500 of this sum to help fill some of the gap caused by the failure of the Club’s owners and senior executives to pay off this debt.”

We’re really impressed with the way Portsmouth FC fans have rallied, turning a negative situation into a chance to support those who need it most. Tom and the supporters are a great example of how tapping into a community – not just friends and family – can work wonders when it comes to fundraising. Can you or your charity follow their lead?
