AI tools are everywhere, and they’re more than just hype! Here’s our guide on how AI can help your charity get more efficient and reach your fundraising goals faster.

AI tools and features are popping up in more places every day, from helping you write snappier emails to picking your next playlist.

But the real power is in how these tools can make your charity’s work easier and more impactful.

Thanks to years of research and hands-on learning, our teams have seen how AI can genuinely support your fundraising efforts. So whether you’re just curious or already dabbling, here’s how AI can help you spot trends in your data, write better stories faster, and help your raise more money – so you can focus on building relationships and growing your mission.

Simple ways AI can help your charity work faster

AI can be incredibly helpful, but it’s your empathy, creativity, experience, and passion that turns the output into something meaningful! Here are a few ideas for how AI can turn your data into stories that move supporters.

A note about protecting your data when using AI. Avoid uploading documents, confidential data, or personal information to AI tools, and share summarised or anonymised data instead of exact figures. See the How to protect your charity’s data section to learn more about keeping your information safe. Learn more from ICO.UK about the principles of data protection and GDPR when using generative AI.

  • Make sense of your data. 45% of charities want help analysing their data, and AI can be that helpful partner! Share summarised or anonymised fundraising or donation data, web traffic, email performance, or social engagement data with AI, then ask what trends it can see between them all.

  • Turn data into inspiring stories. AI can be great for transforming raw data into stories that connect with supporters. For example, tell AI how many dogs your charity re-homed last year, and it can help draft a few impactful social media updates. But remember you’re in control: edit or refine the content further by making sure the updates are written in your charity’s authentic voice and tone!

The AI tool responds with an insight that says donation spikes in Months 2, 4, and 6 appear to follow email open and lick rates, suggesting that optimising email engagement could be a key driver of fundraising.

AI prompting tips for charities

The best results from AI come from human-AI collaboration. Use these recommendations to write AI prompts that get you better, more meaningful results.

  • Make clear, specific requests. Better prompting gets you better, more comprehensive results! For example, instead of, “Write a thank-you email for our fundraisers,” try…

“Help me draft a 150-word email welcoming new fundraisers to our charity’s annual campaign. Keep it consistent with our brand’s voice and tone, and make sure to share how the money they raise will help us build 50 new rainwater harvesting systems for vulnerable communities over the next two years.”

  • Give examples of the outcome you want. This helps eliminate unnecessary back-and-forth. For example,
    • “Summarise this as a bullet points for our newsletter”
    • “Keep the response under 150 words”
    • “Make this thank-you message more professional for LinkedIn”

  • Always review responses for accuracy. AI works best when paired with a human touch. No matter your prompt, always review and edit responses from any AI tool, as they can sometimes be incorrect or misleading.

Data safety and privacy when using AI

As with any digital tool, AI use can come with risks. Here are a few ways you can help keep your charity and its supporters’ data safe, private, and protected.

  • Avoid sharing sensitive donor data or internal documents. Assume anything you share could be kept or used to train future models. Never share donor names, contact details, financial records, or anything confidential. Instead, use anonymised or summarised data. If in doubt, keep it out.

  • Use shared work accounts instead of personal logins. If your charity has an approved shared or company account for AI tools, use that (with permission) instead of a personal account to reduce the risk of accidental exposure.

  • Set clear internal guidelines for AI use. 22% of charities have already upskilled their team in AI, just in the past year! A simple AI policy can help your team understand what tools are approved, what’s safe to share, and how to do it all responsibly.
