Social media can sometimes feel like a moving target.
It moves fast. Trends come and go, algorithms evolve, and for charities, especially those juggling limited time and resources, keeping up can be overwhelming.
That’s exactly why we created the Digital Learning Grant with our friends at Fundraising Everywhere – to help charities like yours build the digital skills that matter the most. And that includes getting to grips with the ever-changing world of social media.
Let’s look at three practical and simple ways your charity can level up your social media game.
1. Engage with supporters on social media
Social media isn’t just a place for updates; it’s a powerful tool for building real relationships with your supporters and growing your community. Fundraisers love sharing their stories online, and when they tag your charity, it’s a golden opportunity to connect.
- Monitor your tags and mentions to spot shout outs and fundraising stories.
- Celebrate fundraiser efforts by replying to comments, mentions and DMs. Making your supporters feel seen is invaluable, and a few words go a long way.
- Reshare standout stories, photos and videos to your own channels (with permission!) to amplify their impact and inspire others.
When supporters feel supported and valued, they’re more likely to stay engaged – and maybe fundraise again in the future.

2. Tell impactful stories with your data
Celebrating your supporters is just the beginning – your social media channels are a great way to show the difference your fundraisers and donors are making. Share updates of your charity’s day to day, your mission in action and show the direct impact of their donations.
Here’s how to turn your data into thumb-stopping social media content:
- Be specific
Instead of saying, ‘We raised £10,000′, try, ‘Thanks to you, 200 families received food parcels this winter’. - Visualise your impact
Use tools like Canva to create infographics that bring your data to life. - Put a face to the figures
Share the real stories behind the numbers – why not create video content that features your volunteers, beneficiaries, or even the fundraisers themselves? All you need is a phone, some natural light, and someone willing to be on camera. Free tools like CapCut, Veed, or iMovie can help you polish the cut.
When you connect data to faces and real-world outcomes, it becomes even more meaningful.
3. Make social analytics simple
Analytics can feel intimidating, but it’s a powerful tool in your digital skills toolkit. It tells you exactly what content is and isn’t working on social, which can help shape your social strategy, so you’re not just posting for the sake of posting.
And it doesn’t need to be complicated! You can learn lot with your social app’s built-in insights, or with a scheduling tool like Sprout Social or Hootsuite.
Here’s the easy way to get started:
- Track performance
Look at impressions (how many people saw your post) and engagement (think likes, comments, shares). These metrics show what resonates with your audience. - Find out when to post
Use your in-app analytics to seewhen your followers are most active, which can guide your posting schedule. Also experiment outside these times to find out what works best for your supporters. Check out the below chart on an Instagram business profile that shows what days and times during the week followers are most active: - Tailor content for each platform
Notice what type of content performs well on different platforms. For example – short form video might be great for Instagram or TikTok, but maybe photos or articles are performing better on X or Facebook. Use your analytics to dictate what type of content you should share on each platform.
Once you know what’s working, you can do more of it – and spend less time on what’s not!
